Barcelona Spain Barcelona metro

The Barcelona Metrorepresents a vast and divaricated network of electric railways, operating both underground and above ground in the suburban regions of the city.

The date of Barcelona Metro's foundation dates back to 1924. This year commemorates the "Gran Metro" construction, locating between the Placa de Catalunya and Lesseps (contemporary Line 3). Two years after that the "Metro Transversal" (modern Line 1) was created, situated between the Placa de Catalunya and la Bordeta. The principal aim of this very line was to connect the centre of the city with the Placa D'Espanya.

Currently the system of the Barcelona Metro consists of nine lines. The main metro lines are guided by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (abbreviated TMB) and the three integrated commuter lines, operating within the derived metropolitan area, are managed by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de  Catalunya (possessing the abbreviation FGC, which stands for Catalan Government Railways).

The six main lines of the Barcelona Metro, run by TMB) are numbered and colored differently:

  • Line1 - red
  • Line 2 - purple
  • Line 3 - green
  • Line 4 - yellow
  • Line 5 - blue
  • Line 11 - light green

The three commuter lines, run by FGC, are numbered Line 6, Line 7, and Line 8 and are marked correspondingly in dark blue, brown, and pink.

The Funicular de Montjuic is a funicular railway and it is a part of the metro network. It is connected to the metro at Parallel station and is marked in dark green color on the map.

Lines 9 and 10 are in process of construction, planning to run from Baladona and Santa Coloma to the Zona Franca and El Prat International Airport.

Speaking about the tickets, there are some options: you can buy a single ticket, which prices is 1.25 Euros. But this ticket is profitable for one journey only. And if you intend to make more journey (10, for example) more economical and advantageous deal will be a T10 ticket, costing 6.90 Euros only (so for ten journeys you save for about 5.60 Euros).

Moreover, a T10 ticket can be used not only for an underground but for the other means of transport as well, and all the journey, being comprised in the limit of time not exceeding 1 hour and 15 minutes, are counted as a single journey.

If you have a necessity to use the means of public transport all the time, then the best deal for you will be, definitely, the Barcelona Card, allowing to "go for a drive" without any limits. What is more, having bought this card you obtain a right for discounts in the restaurants, souvenir shops, and attractions.
